For Kristy Black, Lauren Giraldi and Kate Selfridge, their memories of being freshman on Glenelg's state title-winning team four years ago were fostered by the seniors on that Gladiators' squad.

"That was exciting. A lot of the people were seniors that year and a lot of them went on to play in college. We thought that they were so awesome," recalls senior midfielder Kristy Black, who is bound for the University of Maryland.

"The seniors on that team really helped us out a lot," said Black. "They were encouraging. They really helped us to get to the level we're at right now."

Black, Giraldi and Selfridge, a midfielder and defender, respectively, are in similar roles during this, their final season with the Gladiators, who are coming off of a 15-3 season and will look to contend for a Class 3A-2A state title.

"We have a strong attack, we have a strong defense, and we have a strong midfield, but in order to make it work, we have to make it a team," said Selfridge, who, like Black and the University of Vermont-bound Giraldi, a returning fourth-year varsity player.

The addition of St. John's midfield transfer, Alyana Markwordt, last season, also has served to bolster the hopes of the Gladiators in Howard County League play against traditional rivals Centennial and Mount Hebron, as well as postseason nemesis Century of Carroll County

"We have all of the players together, we just need to come together as a team," said Markordt, who is headed for Ohio State. "If we put all of the pieces together, we're can definitely get there."
