The Zionsville High School Lady Eagles soccer team goal this year was to get a
sectional championship and on Saturday October 17th in front of their home fans
they were able to deliver the much anticipated title beating the University Lady
Trailblazers 2-1 in overtime.
In a game that featured tons of scoring
opportunities for the Lady Eagles, Junior forward Lindsey Hansen came through
big yet again scoring two goals including the game winning goal in
overtime.
It was not supposed to be this hard, but yet Zionsville found
itself in a battle with University. The Lady Trailblazers defied all odds by
being able not only to stay in the match but forcing the Lady Eagles to dip deep
inside to get the win. Zionsville started the game with a frenzy attacking
University's goal relentlessly. However the Lady Blazers GK and defense
withstood the pressure and managed to keep the score tied 0-0. That is until
Hansen came into center stage. On a ball headed by Mina Mansoori, Lindsey was
able to put back the rebound into an open net to give Zionsville the 1-0 lead
with 15 minutes left in the first half.
In the second half disaster
struck for Zionsville as University scored off a cross from a direct kick from
the right side of the field. One of University's players came through unmarked
and hit a one time shot to even up the score. Zionsville kept pushing the entire
half to get the game winner, yet University was able to keep the Lady Eagles off
the scoreboard. The game remained 1-1 so both teams headed into overtime. Then
Hansen became the hero once again, she headed in a beautiful corner kick by
Senior Kasey McKenney three minutes into the first overtime period to give the
Lady Eagles the 2-1 lead. University fought valiantly the rest of the overtime
but could not get the equalizer.
"Our hat goes off to University, they
came in here with nothing to lose and they played their hearts out. Those kids
and their coach Ricky Moreno should be very proud of themselves for their
effort, they really made us work hard for this title", said head coach Ramon
Aguillon. "I cannot be more proud of our team, we were able not only to win a
Sectional title but to beat two of the top three teams in the state in the same
week. That is a remarkable achievement, we are very excited for the opportunity
to play for a Regional title".
Zionsville's record goes tp 12-2-4 as they
advance to face New Palestine on Wednesday October 21st aT 7PM in Hamilton
Southeastern High School field.
"We are exactly where we want to be, we
have a shot at earning a Regional championship. We cannot ask for more. Our
girls will be ready for yet another challenge"
