It was a magical season for the Zionsville soccer team, unfortunately it ended a
couple of games too soon. On a cold Saturday, the Lady Eagles were able to beat
#5 Brownsburg 1-0 in the morning game to reach the Semi-State title game. Yet in
the night cap their efforts came up short as they fell 2-0 to the #9 Cathedral
Irish.
The day started for the Lady Eagles as they took on a very strong
Brownsburg team. It took three minutes for Zionsville to open up the score as
Junior forward Lindsey Hansen came up big once again, scoring the game winning
goal off a corner kick by Senior Kasey McKenney. This was all the scoring
Zionsville needed as their vaunted defense again shut down another opponent to
earn the chance to play for a semi-state title game.
In the night game
the Lady Eagles squared off against a very solid Cathedral team who had beaten
Batesvile 4-0 earlier in the day. Zionsville played a great first half creating
several scoring opportunities, yet the Cathedral goalie made some amazing saves
to keep the score 0-0 at the half.
Unfortunately in the second half,
Cathedral struck early 4 minutes into the half off a cross from the right side
of the box. The ball rebounded off of several Zionsville players and landed on
the foot of a Cathedral forward who shot over Haseley's head to give the Irish
the 1-0 lead.
Not even 5 minutes later, Cathderal increased the lead off a
corner kick goal by Mariah Whitaker. The ball curved inside of the first post
and into the net to make the game 2-0.
Zionsville pushed offensively to
try to close the gap, but their efforts fell short as the Cathedral defense
played a great solid game in the second half. In the end the Irish earned the
semi-state title and a trip to the state finals.
"It is a dissapointing
end to our season", said head coach Ramon Aguillon "However, this was a great
succesful year for our program, to be able to beat three of the top 5 teams in
the state as well as win a Sectional and Regional title is something the girls
should be very proud of". "They accomplished some amazing things this year, we
leave with a sour taste in our mouth, but still very happy with the
season".
Zionsville season record ends at 16-3-4.
"I want to thank
all of our seniors for their contributions, they have raised the bar in terms of
expectations for future generations. They have laid the ground work for the
future success of our program".
