It was a busy day for HCC teams in the golf regionals on Saturday. The day included some gratifying performances and some heartbreak. Perhaps the biggest news came at New Castle, where Noblesville advanced to the state finals with a second place finish. The Millers actually tied for first with Richmond at 330 but lost on the tiebreaking criteria. The big news is that they upended conference rival Hamilton Southeastern in the process. The Royals ended third two shots back at 332. That was good enough to advance to the state finals.

Elsewhere, Lafayette Jefferson finished third in the regional they hosted. The Bronchos will advance to the finals. Unforttunately, the same can not be said for Harrison which ended eighth in the field. Avon also failed to qualify when the Orioles could muster no better than sixth in the field at Martinsville.

The heartbreak of the day came to #17 Zionsville. The Eagles were edged for third in the Franklin Central regional by unranked Shelbyville. The Golden Bears shot a 352, two strokes better than Zionsville.

Here is a look at the qualifying performances by HCC squads.

NEW CASTLE REGIONAL

Fourth-ranked Richmond and No. 11 Noblesville both shot 330, but it was the Red Devils who came away with the regional crown via a three-stroke advantage on the fifth-score tiebreaker at Westwood. Fifth-ranked defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern (332) had an off day but still managed to hold off No. 16 Yorktown by nine shots and capture the all-important third state finals berth.

Noblesville’s Meghan Potee shot a 73 to take medalist honors by one shot over Trisha Witherby of Richmond.

“Our girls played well enough to advance to the state finals, (but) it was definitely a day of ups and downs,” said HSE coach Steve Guenin. “We started out pretty well – one of our goals for the day – but did not finish as well as we would have liked (in) falling short of another one of our goals.

“Our girls learned a lot this weekend about handling pressure and responding to tough conditions. Both will help us Friday. This is when we see what we're made of!”
