Wayne Sparrow, going up for a shot against Towson Catholic during the MIAA A Conference basketball playoffs last February, was one of several underclassmen who helped St. Frances Academy to the Baltimore Catholic League championship and the No. 1 ranking in DigitalSports Top 20. The east Baltimore school will compete for the first time at the Rock Summer League at High Point.
Springbrook was on top of the world after winning the Class 4A state title at Comcast Center in March. The Blue Devils will be one of three Montgomery County squads playing in the Rock Summer League, which tips off Monday afternoon.
High school boys' basketball summer league action will begin Monday as the Rock League begins another campaign at High Point. The league is one of the most competitive in the Baltimore-Washington corridor featuring teams from Anne Arundel (Arundel and Old Mill), Baltimore (New Town), Howard (Long Reach), Montgomery (Blake, Paint Branch and Springbrook) and Prince George's (Charles H. Flowers, DuVal, Eleanor Roosevelt, High Point, Laurel, Northwestern and Oxon Hill) county leagues, the WCAC (Archbishop Carroll, Bishop McNamara, DeMatha Catholic, Gonzaga, Good Counsel, St. John's), IAC (Bullis Prep and Georgetown Prep) and the MIAA (Cardinal Gibbons, Mount St. Joseph, St. Vincent Pallotti and St. Frances Academy).
After a 34-1 regular season and winning the WCAC and D.C. city titles, nationally ranked Gonzaga (D.C.) will look to defend its Rock championship. Baltimore Catholic League champ St. Frances and Class 4A state champ Springbrook will compete along with IAC champion Bullis Prep.
State final four participants Laurel (4A) and Long Reach (3A) are also part of the 26-team lineup at the Beltsville school. The league runs until July 15th with the championship game, proceeding all-star contests on the 10th.
