In a nailbiting performance Heathwood's Varsity Boys beat the Hammond Skyhawks 7-6 without star Davis Ray.
Ray suffered an arm injury in the Highlanders' first game of the season against Cardinal Newman.
Melton Bristow took the mound for the Highlanders and Kyle Grant pitched for Hammond.
After both Chris Barton and Walker Sojourner reached first and second base, Bristow powered them in with a two RBI double deep to left center field.
Hammond responded with five unearned runs including a three run shot by Jay Talbot.
Talbot was 2-4 with a homerun and four RBI's.
But Heathwood wouldn't slow down.
After three scoreless innings the Highlanders answered with five runs of their own to take a 7-5 lead going in to the bottom of the seventh inning.
Bristow allowed runners to reach second and third base with two outs but finished off the Skyhawks by striking out James Walkup.
Heathwood Coach Ashley Farr said he couldn't be happier.
"We really shouldn't be doing this [winning] right now with all of the things that we're dealing with as a team," he said. "But we've come together so well, and the kids are just responding."
Especially Bristow.
Aside from his hitting Bristow improved to 2-0 in his two starts this season in his pitching.
In eleven innings he has given up zero earned runs and has struck out fourteen batters which is as many as the rest of the Highlander pitchers combined.
The win keeps the Highlanders in first with a 3-0 overall record, 2-0 in region, and moves the Skyhawks to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in region.
Heathwood will battle region foe Ben Lippen on Tuesday.
