It's been five years, but the Highlanders finally did what Coach Blackstone has been shooting for since he began coaching at Heathwood Hall -- go Undefeated. The Highlanders posted 28 points against Cardinal Newman Friday night to gain their first undefeated season since the 2004-05 season under Coach Daye.
Senior Quarterback, Mac Whalen, completed 22 of 32 pass attempts for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead his squad to a perfect season. In the first quarter Joey English caught a 59 yard pass from Whalen for the early touchdown. The scoring didn't stop there. In the second quarter Walker Sojourner had a one yard rushing touchdown to put the Highlanders up by 14 points in the first half.
In the second half it was all Whalen and English. A 28 yard pass and a 40 yard pass from Whalen to English, topped off with a pair of Cole Fowble kicks sealed the deal. Joey English caught ten passes total for 200 yards.
Although the win was significant for Heathwood, perhaps the more memorable win came last week when the Highlanders took on their cross-town rival -- the Hammond Skyhawks. Heathwood hadn't beat the Skyhawks since the 2005-06 season when they went 11-1. But players said the 10-7 win last Friday made the last few years of losing not matter.
"It's unbelievable," said Mac Whalen. "We knew what we had to do to get it done. We knew we were gonna win, it was just a matter of getting it done."
Getting it done with a field goal with four seconds left in the game. Cole Fowble, Sophomore, stepped up to the challenge, and delivered.
"I knew I just needed to make a routine field goal," Fowble said. "And we won it. It was worth it for these seniors."
Heathwood's unblemished record puts them in a favorable position going into the postseason. They face the Porter-Gaud Cyclones (5-4) who struggled this season with losses to Hammond, Ben Lippen, and Lawrence Manning -- all of whom, of course, the Highalnders have defeated.
