High hopes for surprising Seneca

One of the biggest surprises this football season has been Seneca, which has rebounded from last season's 3-7 campaign and could win a share of a division title and solidify its playoff prospects with a win this week.

The Golden Eagles are 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Burlco/Olympic Liberty Division after Friday's 34-0 win over Northern Burlington.

A win on Friday at Shawnee would clinch at least a share of the Liberty Division title and would also enhance the Golden Eagles' chances to qualify for the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs.

"If in the summer you would have told me we'd be 4-2 and playing for a chance at a playoff spot and the conference, I would have signed up right away," Seneca coach Bill Fisher said.

Shawnee is in the same boat as Seneca, also 4-2 and 3-1. The Renegades also would clinch at least a share of the Liberty Division with a win and would strengthen their Group 4 playoff chances.

Since Seneca fielded its first varsity team in 2004, these schools have never had a season when both were fighting for a title.

In fact, Seneca is 1-4 all-time against Shawnee. The four losses were by shutouts and the win was a 30-14 triumph in 2006 when the Golden Eagles went 11-1.

Seneca has some injury issues. Quarterback Billy Limpert is out for the season with a knee injury. The team's top two-way lineman, Nigel Gray, has a dislocated elbow and will miss the Shawnee game.

Alternating at quarterback in the run-oriented offense are juniors Lucas Brown and Charlie Owl, a point guard in basketball who has great quickness. Brown is also a starting defensive lineman.

Shawnee has won four in a row since a 0-2 start.
