During half time of Friday's Northern Region Classic, three Northern Region students -- and one student-athlete -- were awarded $1,000 scholarships from DigitalSports.
Recent Westfield graduate
David Kruchko was selected as the Applause Scholarship winner, which was awarded to the Northern Region student-athlete who overcame the most adversity to excel both on the field and in the classroom.
During his junior season against Langley, Kruchko suffered such a severe break in his leg that doctors feared he might not walk again. This A-student underwent multiple surgeries and missed a couple months of school before returning to Westfield and to the Bulldogs' football program.
This past year Kruchko
was one
of the stars of the Westfield team that went undefeated en route to capturing the
Virginia AAA Division 6 state championship.
He finished the season with 41 receptions for 518 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Kruchko, who is planning to try and walk on at Virginia Tech this fall, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to help further his education.
DigitalSports also awarded three, $1,000 Media Scholarships to the Northern Region students who contributed the best content on the most consistent basis to DigitalSports.com.
The winner for the Fall sports season was rising Robinson senior Eric Avissar, who has yet to decide on a future college. The winner for the Winter sports season was recent Westfield graduate Jessica Lloyd, who will pursue her college education at Virginia Tech. And the winner for the Spring sports season was recent Annandale graduate Greg Young, who will continue his journalism studies at the University of Missouri.
