In Appreciation of what Coach Newell has brought to our Islands.

Coach Pete Newell had tremendous influence on all levels of the game. He lead a great career that touched many on his legendary life journey. The Naismith Hall of Famer is one of three coaches that pulled off the "Triple Crown" of coaching by winning the NCAA Title equivalent to the NIT with the USF Dons, in 1949 and later again in the NCAA tournament, at Cal in 1959. Furthermore, in closing out his coaching career, Pete Newell took the USA team to Rome and brought back the Gold Metal in the 1960 Olympics, with the Greats, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. After departing a very successful coaching career, in 1968 Pete worked in the front office of several NBA teams- including the Los Angeles Lakers where he was instrumental in the trade that brought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar over from the Milwaukee Bucks. He later began his long running widely acclaimed "Big Man Camps" for collegiate and Professional players. Since 2000, The National Association of Basketball Coaches has presented the Pete Newell Big Man Award in his honor.

In memory of the late coaching legend Pete Newell and a close friend and colleague of Coach Merv Lopes, an award in remembrance of the great ambassador is not only appropriate but could also serve precedence to prospective nationally ranked teams and marquee high school recruits for the Annual Saint Francis Merv Lopes Classic. This award represents one of basketball's most respected and beloved figures of the game. Fitting enough, in valor of a true coaching legend, this award is given to the most outstanding Big Man in the Saint Francis Annual Merv Lopes Classic, as the most deserving candidate showcased in the tournament. The recipient will also receive an invitation to the annual Big Man Camp given by the director and coaching Legend Merv Lopes. This will give the talented student athlete a rare chance to participate, complements of the Big Man camp. The Camp features the great guidance of NBA and college coaches as well as participants that rank amongst the nations best on all three levels; high school, college and The NBA.
