Ashburn (Dec. 12, 2008) - When it comes to athletics in Broad Run High School's 40-year history these are indeed "Golden Times" for the Maroon and Gold with three state titles since May in softball, girls soccer and football.

Another indication of the current sports success on Ashburn Road is the number of NCAA Division I athletes walking the hallways and on Wednesday morning the Spartans held a signing ceremony for seven athletes that will play in college next year: Kristin Burt (volleyball/Norfolk State), Will Field (lacrosse/Sacred Heart), Haley Johnson (softball/James Madison), Emily Patterson (lacrosse/Saint Frances), Meredith Rogers (lacrosse/Old Dominion), Tim Sanders (lacrosse/Sacred Heart) and Meghan Waterman (softball/Louisiana-Lafayette).

While most of those athletes are familiar names to Broad Run fans -- Patterson and Rogers have helped the girls lacrosse team to three straight Dulles District titles; Field was on the state championship football team and with Sanders, who also plays basketball, helped the Spartans to the district title last year; Burt helped Broad Run volleyball to its best finish ever a season ago; and Johnson has anchored at catch back-to-back undefeated state title runs for the Spartan softball team -- Waterman is a new face as a transfer to Ashburn from Texas.

Waterman played her first three seasons of high school softball at Monsignor Kelly High School in Beaumont before transferring to Broad Run for her senior season. She helped Monsignor Kelly to a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 6A State Championship in 2008.

Waterman, who is expected to play shortstop for the Spartans, advanced to the State Tournament in 2008 and the Regionals in 2007.  She led the Monsignor Kelly Bulldogs to a 27-6 (.818) overall record in 2008, hitting .410 with eight doubles, a home run, 26 RBI.  Waterman was tabbed All-District and All-State in 2006 and 2007 and named to the All-State Tournament Team in 2008.  She was the Monsignor Kelly Offensive MVP in 2006 and Player with the Most Heart in 2007. Waterman was named to the All-Southeast Texas Softball team from 2006-08.
