South Riding (Feb. 20, 2009) - Freedom High School, with a commanding 74-43 win over Briar Woods Friday, is one game away from erasing the bitter memories of last year's dramatic loss to Loudoun County on a buzzer beater in the AA Dulles District girls basketball finals.

The Eagles (22-2 overall) will have to face Loudoun County again in Saturday's district finals at 6 p.m. at Freedom High School.  Briar Woods had their season end with a 14-9 record.

Kesley Buchanan had a big double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds and Meixandra Porter scored 18 points and Dionna Scott added 17 points for Freedom and Kim Koditek scored a career-best 12 points.

Briar Woods, which trailed 32-11 at the half and 58-19 heading into the final quarter was led by Kim Bell with 23 points, 14 of which came in the final quarter

The Eagles used a 19-0 run in the first half to put them in the district finals at home for the second straight season. Last year, the Eagles were leading 47-45 in the title game with three seconds left when the Raiders inbounded the ball at halfcourt and a shot was blocked that went to Alissa Kain who knocked down a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left for the Raider win.

LOUDOUN COUNTY 58, BROAD RUN 50

For the third time in four years, the Lady Raiders of Loudoun County will compete in the Dulles District Championship game.

Loudoun County jumped out to a 22-15 first quarter lead, fought off foul trouble and a couple of Broad Run runs, and defeated the Spartans 58-50.

Loudoun County's depth happened to be the difference in the contest as senior point guard Kerry Sarver and junior Kendra Holmes both sat out a majority of the first half.  Sarver was only on the floor for 3 minutes and Holmes competed in only 4 minutes of first half play. With two of their key players out, Brittany Batts had 15 of her game high 20 in the first half while Alissa Kain had 8 of her 16 points in the first 16 minutes of play.  Freshman Jenna Strange stepped up with 5 first half points and freshman Katrina Kirby also tallied 3 points in the second quarter as County led 36-28 at halftime.

Holmes, the Dulles District's Division 4 player of the year, scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in only 16 minutes of play.  Kain, active on both ends of the court, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 4 assist to go along with her 16 points.  Batts hit three-three's in the contest and had 5 key rebounds for the Raiders.  Sophomore Jocie Collins and freshman Erica Linnemann also provided key minutes of play in County's win.

Broad Run was led by Haley Johnson's 13 points, Maggie Andricosky's 11, and Chelsea Gantt's 10.

With the win, County secured a first round bye in next week's regional play while Broad Run will be in quarterfinal action on Tuesday.  Seedings and teams have yet to be determined.
