Glenelg's Class 2A-1A state champion Chris Stinnett won six of nine bouts at last weekend's National High School Coaches' Association senior nationals on the way to an eighth place finish at 135 pounds that earned All-American honors for Cal State-Fullerton-bound wrestler.
Maryland's lone placewiinner in one of the nation's premiere events for high school seniors, Stinnett lost his first bout, 4-2, to the event's eventual third-place finisher in his weight class, Nick Hucke, of Wisconsin.
"He was a three-time Wisconsin state champ who was ranked fourth in the country," said Stinnett, who then won six consecutive bouts, including one by a fall in 1:18 over New York's Nick Stella, before losing two straight and finishing eighth.
"I beat a two-time Minnesota state champ in an overtime rideout," said Stinnett, referring to his third straight win, 5-1, over Minnesota's Joe Selly. "It was 1-1 going into the rideout, and I chose down. I reversed him into a cradle and put him to his back and I won 5-1."
Among Stinnett's other wins were those over Washington's Kyle Johnson, 2-0, in overtime; Zak Andrews of Pennsylvania, 11-6; Pierre Frazile of Florida, 5-2; and Paul Vitersi of Indianna, 2-1.
