During this, her final season at the helm, Purcell guided the Eagles to titles in the Howard County and regional championship games before falling in the Class 3A state semifinal to eventual Class 3A state titlist Fallston of Harford County, a winner of its 10th state crown.

Purcell, the only field hockey coach in the school's thirty year existence, guided the Eagles' field hockey team to a state crown in 1995.

Last year's Eagles were undefeated in county play a year ago when they lost to rival Glenelg, which, this year, had also defeated Centennial, 7-4, during their regular-season meeting.

But Purcell's emotionally regenerated Eagles (a year-ending 16-3 record) rebounded to win this year's county title-game rematch, during which goalie Liz Snyder made 10 saves, in addition to directiing the defensive shifts and positioning from her crouch outside the net.

Lindsey Norris scored a late goal that lifted the Eagles to a 2-1 upset, sending their coach out a winner in against the league during this, her 31st and final season.

The Eagles followed the county championship run with another for the regional title, during which they outscored Wilde Lake, Long Reach and Atholton by a combined score of 9-1.

Co-Coach of
The Year
Jim Brown,
Atholton

Brown, in his second-year, revived a program that appeared to be on its last legs when he took over the coaching reigns in 2006.

The Raiders had been winless over a three-year period, and were considered an easy victory in a Howard County League known for its stellar field hockey programs.

Brown started slowly, however, developing an interest through his daughters, Angela, and, Kelly. The former began playing field hockey in 2002, and, the latter enrolled at Atholton in 2005.

Brown began coaching the Raiders' junior varsity program in 2005. The following season, during Brown's initial year as varsity coach,  he guided the Raiders to four victories in 15 games -- nine of which were losses.

But the taste of winning carried over into this season, when the Raiders were victorious in 11 of 17 games, including the gaining of a berth in the Class 3A regional title game against eventual champion Centennial.

Sarah Parks,
Centennial

The senior scored 19 goals and assisted on a school record 14 others from her position on the left wing to lead the Eagles to a 16-3 record as well as titles in both the Howard County and region.

Largely behind Parks, who is headed for Dartmouth and will play field hockey there, the Eagles were Class 3A state semifinalists, losing to eventual state champion Fallston of Harford County.

Although she was often targeted by defenses especially geared to stop her, Parks still was able to add to her school career -record totals of 53 goals and 27 assists.

Parks set a single-season school record for goals with 22 last season.

"Sarah Parks dominates the forward line. She sets up the plays," said coach Gaile Purcell. "She's got such great ball-handling and stick skills that most teams feel that they have to double and triple team her, and they do."

Like her counter part on the Centennial, squad, Sarah Parks, Thompson had a penchant for putting the ball into the cage, finishing with 16 goals and assisting on three others.

And like Parks, Thompson established career scoring records for the Gladiators with 47 career goals. Known as a finisher, Thompson also had 10 assists.

Thompson's ability to draw attention from opposing defenses opened things up for her teammates, such as Lauriann Parker and Kristy Black, particularly when she maintains her dribble for long stretches.
