DigitalSports-Maryland State Wrestling Association Top 20

1) McDonogh -- The Eagles had a light week -- by that, we mean they routed St. Mary's and Archbishop Spalding each by identical scores of 70-6. They're gearing up for this weekend's defense of their Mount Mat Madness at The Community College of Baltimore in Catonsville during this, the most superlative season a McDonogh wrestling team has ever had.

2) Southern Garrett -- The Rams are 13-0, having dominated Walkersville and one other team in a recent tri-meet. Mount Ridge is on tap in a big match on Thursday night for the Rams, who are led by state champ George Scheffel at 125 pounds.

3) DeMatha -- The Stags stepped up big over St. Benedict's of New Jersey to win the South River Tourament with individual champs in Pat Prada, Matt Dugan, Mike Munno and Mike Aguggia.

4) LaPlata -- The Warriors routed Mount Hebron, 71-0, and have not slowed down at all, led by state runner-up Tanner Shaffer and state placewinner Jake Shilling. The two-time defending Class 4A-3A state champs are headed into this weekend's MMM tournament.

5) Glenelg -- Big upset by the Gladiators, who defeated powerful Mount St. Joseph with a couple of surprises. Among those was the return from injury of state runner-up Chris Stinnett, who dropped to 140. The other shock was a drop by third-place state finisher, Tim Chase, to 152, after having competed at 171 pounds during last year's postseason.

6) Mount St. Joseph -- The Gaels will try to bounce back at the MMM, which could be tough. But we'll see. Frankie Goodwin is in the hunt for title after being runner-up last year.

7) North Carroll -- Big comeback for the Panthers winning Franklin's Invitational over Urbana and Archbishop Curley, with champs Mason Goretsas, Chris Stout and Jason Thomen.

8) Urbana -- The Hawks rise due to their runner-up effort at Franklin, where they finished ahead of Curley and crowned Adam Krop and Peter Tatanish for the second straight year.

9) Archbishop Curley -- The Friars took a drop by finishing third at Franklin, where Tyler Scarinzi, Bubba Corbett and Tony Powell earned their titles. The MMM offers a chance at redemption.

10) Stephen Decatur -- Another MMM team with defending state champ Danny Miller leading the way at 189. Coached by Kevin Gilligan.

11) Old Mill -- The Patriots nearly shut out Severna Park and another team last week. The MMM-bound, defending Class 4A-3A state tournament champs have emerged as a solid contender led by state champ Ethan Brown, Nigel Pierce and Aaron Hawkins among the upperweights.

12) Mountain Ridge -- State runner-up Stephen Whetstone was the lone champion at this past weekend's Hub Cup Invitational at North Hagerstown, but his depth-laden squad debuts in the Top 20 following its big win there.

13) Hereford -- The Bulls won a close one, 37-30, over John Carroll with big wins by three-time state champ Josh Asper and Max Rosen --  the latter at 112 pounds.

14) John Carroll -- The Patriots' Ethan Reese earned his 100th career win, and Matt Miller continued his pinning ways. They routed then-No. 13 Loyola to emerge solidly as the fourth-best team, right now, in the MIAA.

15) Owings Mills -- Guy Pritzker's Eagles debut in the Top 20 following last weekend's fourth-place finish at Franklin's Invitational. Crowned were regional champions Avi Friedman and Cody Rosen-Stone and state champion Tony Mack.

16) Rising Sun -- Led by two-time defending champ Matt Jackson, those defending Class 2A-1A duals and tournament champs are among those teams headed to the MMM.

17) Walt Whitman -- Taylor Leighton, Eric Berverly and Aaron Norris are the leaders of these Vikings of Montgomery County -- another of the 11, Top 20 teams which is headed for this weekend's prestigious MMMM Tournament.

18) Loyola -- The Dons are in a bit of a tailspin, having lost at Winters Mill to Westminster, and then, gotten drubbed by John Carroll last week. Coach Steve Truitt and MIAA champ Colin Schuster have to right the ship.

19) Atholton -- Good team that's getting more dangerous every day. The Raiders debut in the Top 20 with their unbeaten dual meet record. This is a talented team with county and region champ Brian Nance at 285, and county and regional runners-up Bruce Steinel, Doug Carpenter, Malcolm Stennett and Mike Masserelli.

20) River Hill -- Those Hawks debut in the Top 20 after sweeping all eight of their dual meets at the Fort Hill Duals, including a win over then No. 12 and previously unbeaten Brunswick. Cameron Kirby (103-112), Evan Shebel (125) -- who defeated a West Virginia state champ -- state runner-up Nathan White (140) and Jake Pace (215) all went unbeaten in eight dual meets.
