Howard County Athlete of the Week
Bethany Keefer, Wilde Lake girls soccer

Keefer, a senior midfielder, had an assist on the game-tying score and notched the game-winning goal to lift the No. 8 Wildecats to a 2-1 comeback victory over River Hill in the Howard County championship last Tuesday.

After trailing at the break, 1-0, Keefer fed a perfect through ball to freshman forward Gillian Sawyer, who got Wilde Lake on the scoreboard.  Keefer scored her goal with about five minutes left in regulation.

The Wilde Lake victory ended a two-year run of River Hill’s hold on the county title. The Hawks had won the previous two title games en route to regional and state championship wins, at the Class 3A and 2A levels, respectively.

"Bethany Keefer played a great game, Caitlin Duff played a great game, Faryn [Watts] occupied four defenders up there but it was a team effort," said Wildcats' first-year coach Phil Webster, whose team improved to 10-3 and now takes aim at the region playoffs.  "Every player stepped up and did a great job.  It was a great, great win for Wilde Lake."

Keefer than added a goal on Friday in the Wildecats' opening round playoff win over Aberdeen 3-1 in the Class 3A East region.

For her efforts, Keefer was named the Miller Brothers Automotive Group: Howard County Player of the Week for the week of October 20th.   She was presented with a personalized plaque and a gift certificate to T-Bonz Grille in Ellicott City.
