Long Reach High won the Howard County fall cheerleading crown Thursday afternoon before a festive audience at Hammond. The Lightning, coached by Elisabeth Rice, accumulated 296 points out of a maximum 360, to follow up their winter title from last school year.


River Hill was runner-up with 278.5, followed by Atholton (278). The top three squads advanced to next week's South Region competition at Leonardtown. Anne Arundel, Charles and St. Mary's counties will be represented.

The state championship competition is Nov. 8 at North Point, featuring the top four finishers from the North and South Region. Long Reach won the regional championship a year ago.
