Ashburn (Dec. 30, 2008) - Even without leading scorer Myisha Goodwin in uniform Tuesday night it appeared that the Edison High School girls basketball team would cruise to the title of the Second Annual DigitalSports.com Holiday Tournament as they led host Briar Woods by 10 points at the half. The Falcons, however, came out in a defensive mood in the second half, holding Edison to just one field goal in the third quarter and 10 points total after the break to take the championship with a 46-35 victory.
Falcon sophomore guard Ashley Adams celebrated her "Sweet 16" birthday in style with a team-high 11 points and she was named to the All-Tournament team. Briar Woods junior forward Kim Bell scored eight points and picked up eight of her 11 rebounds in the second half as she was named tournament MVP.
Edison was led by sophomore guard Kierra Graham who scored 12 pionts and was named to the All-Tournament team.
In the consolation game, Fauquier used a 20-point first quarter to take control against Handley (5-5) and the Falcons went on to win, 50-37. Fauquier had as many 3-pointers in the game (eight) as they had players in uniform with junior Miranda Wingo earning All-Tournament honors with four treys and a game-high 21 points.
Handley was led by All-Tournament selection sophomore Erin Drumheller, who had a team-high 12 points.
In the title game, Briar Woods was cold from the field to start, missing nine of its first 10 shots, and Edison was able to open up a lead behind the play of Graham, sophomore Krystyna Watts and freshman Brittany Murray as the three combined for 22 of Edison's 25 points in the half. In the second half, the trio were held to six combined points by a feisty Falcon defense.
Briar Woods had nine different players score in the second half and the Falcons forced 10 Edison turnovers. The Falcons were very aggressive getting to the foul line, shooting 21 foul shots in the second half after just four foul shots in the first half. The Falcons converted on 17 of those free throws. Edison went to the line just 10 times, making four.
The Falcons out-scored the Eagles, 15-4 in the third quarter to take a slim 30-29 lead going into the final quarter. The run was helped by a technical foul called on the Edison bench with the Eagles up 27-24. The technical came after Edison was protesting a mix-up in numbers in which junior Ashley Potts (#20) was given a fourth foul even though the offensive foul was actually on Meagan Chesley (#10). Bell sank both technical free throws to make it 27-26 Edison.
Aminah Aziz, one of just two seniors on the young Briar Woods roster which features three freshman and six sophomores, then hit two free throws to put Briar Woods up for the first time in the contest, 28-27 with 3:09 left in the thrid quarter. Adams hit a jumper to make it 30-27 but sophomore Phylicia Goins hit a basket to make it 30-29.
Watts put Edison back on top 31-30 early in the quarter but sophomore Jillian Olson hit a transition basket to put Briar Woods ahead and the Falons would not give up that lead as they scored 16 of the next 18 points.
Freshman guard Macy Jones, coming off the bench cold after play was stopped for a BW injury, immediately hit a 3-pointer to give the Falcons a 35-31 edge. Bell made a nice baseline move to move the lead to 37-31 with 3:56 to play.
Edison cut the lead to four with a Graham steal and layin but Briar Woods was clutch from the foul line with Adams, sophomore Brittany Gilbert and Bell combining for six-for-six.
Briar Woods wasn't done as senior forward Erica Kiechlin scored and another Adams free throw made it 46-33 with 46 seconds to play.
All that was left for Briar Woods was to run the clock out and accept the tournament trophy (donated by Crown Trophy of Ashburn).
