Purcellville, VA (May 19, 2009) - It was a big night at Loudoun Valley High School for the Vikings Monday as baseball, softball and girls soccer advanced to the semifinals in the AAA Cedar Run District playoffs. The Viking boys soccer team opens quarterfinal action Tuesday at Liberty.

Softball: Loudoun Valley 1, Fauquier 0

No. 2 seed Loudoun Valley beat No. 7 seed Fauquier in a nailbiter at Loudoun Valley on Monday. The score was 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning when sophomore Jamie Crisp hit a double, leaving her in scoring position. Sophomore Danny Psimas hit a line drive, bringing in Crisp for the sole run of the game. Seniors Caroline Williams and Amanda Horton had solid hits, but Valley left five batters on base throughout the game. The Viking victory advances Loudoun Valley to the semifinals in the AAA Cedar Run District playoffs. The Vikes will play at Stonewall Jackson on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Girls Soccer: Loudoun Valley 8, Stonewall Jackson 0

It was a shutout for the Vikes as Loudoun Valley triumphed over Stonewall Jackson in the AAA Cedar Run District quarterfinals. The Vikings were up 6-0 within the first 20 minutes of play. Two more goals were scored in the second half of the game to bring the team to an 8-0 shutout.

Highlights:
Junior Ashley Manning: 4 goals, 1 assist (25 for the season)
Freshman Charlotte Ratcliff: 1 goal
Junior Chrystal Oden: 1 goal (her 8th of the season)
Junior Danielle Stephens: 1 goal, 1 assist
Freshman Tabitha McHale: 1 goal (her 11th of the season)

Additional assists came from freshman Lucy Etro, junior Ashleigh Hammer, and senior Sarah Van Vleet.

The girls will travel to Osbourn High School Tuesday for the AAA Cedar Run District semifinals. They will play Osbourn Park at 8 p.m.

Baseball report courtesy of Loudoun Valley: Vikings Beat Fauquier 10-6, Advance to District Semis 

In the first round of the Cedar Run District playoffs, the Loudoun Valley Vikings baseball team defeated the Fauquier Falcons 10-6.  It was all Valley through the first four innings. In the bottom of the first inning, the Vikes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Senior catcher Wes Walker hit a solo jack to left center for his fourth home run of the season.  Junior Alex Owens followed with a line drive double. Juniors Andrew Creamer and Beattie Southerland hit back to back singles scoring Owens.  Senior TJ Daeschner hit a double to the gap plating Creamer but Southerland trying to score from 1st base was thrown out at the plate.  

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Vikings added three more runs. Junior Daniel Fleming reached on a two base error and senior Iain Mottice drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Walker hit a sacrifice fly RBI scoring Fleming.  Owens would hit his second double of the night scoring Mottice all the way from 1st base. Freshman Matt Reed hit a single to score Owens giving the Vikings an early 6-0 lead.  

In the bottom of the 4th inning with the Vikings on top 8-2, senior TJ Daeschner hit a two run bomb making it 10-2.   

The Falcons tried to mount a comeback in the top of the 7th inning. With the score 10-6, the Falcons had runners on 1st and 2ndbase with one out.  Dick McMahon hit a line drive shot right to centerfielder Matt Reed for the second out.  Senior Daniel Burke who came in relief in the top of the 5th inning walked Drew Smith to load the bases, bringing up catcher Ryan Smith. Smith had already hit a homerun, double, and triple.  But Burke would come through getting Smith to ground out to 3rd baseman Owens to end the game.  

Senior Adam Reed got the start for the Vikings going 4 1/3 innings for the win.  He gave up three runs while scattering eight hits and striking out four falcon hitters.  Burke pitched 2 2/3 innings giving three runs on five hits.   

The Vikings have won eleven straight games heading into the semi-finals of the Cedar Run district tournament.  They will play Osbourn High School who defeated Liberty 2-1, on Tuesday, May 19 at Battlefield High School. First pitch is set for 7 pm.   

In the other first round games, top seeded Osbourn Park defeated Culpeper 9-0 and Battlefield beat Stonewall Jackson 3-0. Osbourn Park will face Battlefield 4pm at Battlefield. The Cedar Run District championship game will be played on Thursday, May 21 at 7pm at Battlefield High School.
