DeMatha (11-1) bounced back from a 1 goal loss to ESPN nationally ranked Las Cruces in New Mexico with eight consecutive victories against nationally ranked St Pius X of Albuquerque (NM), St John's College High School, Bishop McNamara, Bishop O'Connell, Paul VI, Archbishop Carroll, Bishop Ireton, and Good Counsel. The away game 3-0 victory against O'Connell was the first time in the past two years that DeMatha has defeated the Knights in regulation play, with past year contests ending in 0-0 draws or penalty kicks to determine the outcome. DeMatha has defeated WCAC second place Good Counsel by identical scores of 3-1 twice this season.
The latest rankings by NSCAA/adidas (9/29/2009) list DeMatha as #19 in the Nation, #3 in Region IV which extends from Georgia through Delaware, and #2 in Maryland behind McDonogh of Baltimore which is ranked #2 in the nation. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) is the largest coaches association in the United States, founded in 1941, with more than 28,000 members.
The Washington Post (9/30/2009) ranks DeMatha #1 in the Washington DC Metro Area.
Sports Illustrated ranked DeMatha as having the top athletic program in the state of Maryland in 2009.
Sports Illustrated previously ranked DeMatha's athletic program as #2 in the nation in 2005 and in 2007.
