TRAFALGAR
This one is — in all likelihood — for the conference championship.
The Indian Creek High School football team travels to Triton Central for a match-up between the defending Mid-Indiana Conference champion Tigers and a Braves team that is in contention for the conference crown.
Both teams are undefeated in conference play at 3-0, and Triton Central is 6-1 overall. Indian Creek is 5-2 overall.
“The winner’s locked in for at least a share (of the championship),” Indian Creek coach Mike Gillin said. “We certainly would like to bring that trophy to Indian Creek.”
To do that, the Braves will have to beat a team that runs four offensive schemes, Gillin said.
“It’s really difficult to prepare for,” he said. “I don’t know how they have the time to practice everything.”
Tigers junior quarterback Jordan Martin has several senior weapons offensively at his disposal, and so far, that arsenal has been effective.
Seniors Ben Mohr and Garrett Pritt are splitting time carrying the ball, Mohr with 49 attempts for 250 yards and Pritt with 48 attempts for 282 yards. Both have three rushing touchdowns, and senior Justin Sprinkle also has two.
Martin has completed almost 58 percent of his passes for 1,015 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus three rushing touchdowns. Gillin called him a “capable quarterback” who can run the ball.
“They’re just really hard to prepare for,” Gillin said.
Pritt also has four receiving touchdowns on 26 receptions for 407 yards. Sprinkle and senior Cody Harvey have two.
Gillin said the defense has to force three and outs and keep Triton Central’s offense off the field
Defensively, the Tigers are led by sophomore Steven Glackman’s six sacks and junior Chris Purvis’ three interceptions.
Indian Creek has had two receivers both catch seven touchdowns this season, Zac Tharpe and Brandon Collins. Tharpe has 36 receptions for 514 yards while Collins has caught 55 balls for 626 yards.
“We also feel we have to get the ground game going,” Gillin said, adding that the Braves had their first 100-yard rushing performance last week by Joel Ankney.
“We’re hoping to continue that this week,” Gillin said.
Ankney has carried the ball 96 times for 384 yards and five touchdowns this season.
The Braves’ defense has 12 interceptions and 18 sacks to its credit. Brandon Collins and Brandon Cochran both have three interceptions; Josh Bales and Josh Phelps lead the team with four sacks, apiece.
