Marygrace Jay's 18 Leads Warhawks to Victory over Hornets
Madison's girls' basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 63-37 road victory Tuesday night at Herndon.
The Warhawks fed off the dominating inside game of senior forward Marygrace Jay, who posted a game-high 18 points in the victory.
"I have faith in my teammates," Jay said. "My teammates have faith in me. They know if I post up on baseline side they can drive just as well as pass me the ball."
Madison had pushed the lead to 34-8 headed into half time but Herndon, led by sophomore guard/forward Phyllis Martin and senior guard Emily Baumgartner, made the game more competitive in the second half. Martin hit from beyond the arc three times during the final two quarters to finish with a team-high 12 points while Baumgartner connected on 5-of-7 shots from the foul line.
But Jay -- and a host of other Warhawks with a similarly hot hand -- proved too much to overcome. Madison senior guard/forward Katie Wimmer also finished in double-figures scoring with 12 points, eight of which came in the second half, while senior guard Leah Stiegler and sophomore guard Erin Kavanagh added nine and eight points, respectively.
