Ashburn (Dec. 28, 2008) - Team chemistry. If you could patent it, there would be an endless line of coaches standing outside of the bottling plant.

Part of the reason teams play in holiday tournaments is to work on that elusive team chemistry in a non-district situation and Saturday night at Stone Bridge High School two boys teams with the right mixture working were rewarded with victories on the second day of the Leesburg Honda Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Loudoun Valley followed Friday's dispiriting loss to Broad Run with a "players only meeting" led by the Viking seniors Saturday morning and then a team lunch. The team-building paid off as Valley defeated Dominion, 62-52, Saturday night to improve to 2-4 on the season.

"We talked some things through ... I think today actually turned our whole season around," said Valley senior Connor Trombly.

Dominion, on the other hand, is struggling to get all of its players on the court at the same time as the Titans (6-3) were without leader DeAndre Albritton, who sat out most of the first half with leg injuries before making a go of it, only to exit in the second half after smacking his hand.

In the second boys game, Broad Run improved on one of its best starts in school history as the Spartans moved to 9-1 on the season with a 70-62 win over a struggling Stone Bridge squad. The Spartans won only seven games last season and junior Kevin McGaughey, who had a game-high 17 points Saturday, says the difference this season is team unity.

"We have more team unity. I don't think we are that much more skilled than last year but we just play together more as a team," said McGaughey.

Stone Bridge (3-5) has now lost four straight games since scoring a school-record 100 points against Falls Church on Dec. 9. The Bulldogs are averaging just 58 points a game during their skid.

On the girls side of the tournament, Broad Run (4-5) and Loudoun Valley (6-2) both improved to 2-0 in the event with victories Saturday as the Spartans stopped Herndon, 48-37, and the Vikings defeated Stone Bridge, 55-47.

Herndon (4-5) was hamstrung in their defeat as their top scorer, Phyliss Martin, was home sick with the flu. Broad Run was led by senior Chelsea Gantt's career-high 19 points. Deborah Headen scored a game-high 21 points for Herndon.

In the other girls game, the Vikings were led by Jess Mullen with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Christina Blue’s 13 points. Chrystal Oden also chipped in with nine points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Sara Stancik led Stone Bridge (2-6) with nine points.

The Loudoun Valley boys jumped out to a 28-17 halftime advantage behind the hot shooting of junior Dejango DeGree who had a game-high 19 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Senior James Hemphill added 10 points and Trombly, Jamie Clarke and John Yoxthimer each had eight as the Vikes attacked the Titans with a relentless transition game that resulted in a lot of easy layins.

Albritton made his first appearance in the contest with 4:44 left in the second quarter and he scored just seven points, all in the second half. DeAndre Reaves and Chris Huff each scored 13 points for Dominion. The Titans slice Valley's lead in half with a 19-point third quarter but the Vikes had seven players score in the final quarter as they held Dominion in check.

In the second boys game, Stone Bridge showed its two offensive sides in the first half, reeling off 25 points in the first quarter behind the knock-down 3-point shooting of Nate Ingersoll and Michael Prince, who combined for five treys in the quarter. Broad Run, however, poured in 21 points in the quarter to keep pace. In the second quarter, Stone Bridge was held to one field goal and three points.

Nik Brown scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs tried to mount a rally. Ingersoll finished with 12, all on 3-pointers.

The Spartans had more scoring depth than the Bulldogs, with Breon Earl and Didier Saidi supporting McGaughey's 17 with 14 apiece.

Broad Run had a huge advantage at the foul line where the Spartans were 18 of 28. Stone Bridge went to the line just eight times, making seven. Opponents have been shooting just about double Stone Bridge's foul shots in the last four games.
