Ashburn (Feb. 5, 2009) - Stone Bridge High School captured its first ever AAA Liberty District gymnastics title Wednesday, knocking off defending district champion Thomas Jefferson after the Colonials top gymnast, Kelly Watson, suffered an a lower leg injury on the floor exercise on the final rotation of the evening.

With Watson, who had scored a 9.400 on the floor on Jan. 22 at a meet at Lake Braddock, unable to score in the event, Thomas Jefferson settled for 31.850 team points on the floor, more than two points less than Stone Bridge, who earned 34.125. In the end, the host Bulldogs scored 135.550 team points to take the title with the Colonials grabbing second with 133.950. Langley was third at 131.125 followed by James Madison in fourth at 124.025. Woodson, South Lakes, McLean and Marshall rounded out the standings.

Langley's Emily Bullen captured the All-Around for the second straight year, winning both the beam (9.500) and floor (9.350). It is unlikely that Watson would have caught Bullen as she would have needed an 9.850 on her floor exercise to catch the Highlander but Watson, who was first on the vault with a 9.400 and second on bars at 8.825 would have challenged for a top four finish, but she landed in pain on a tumbling run and had to be helped from the mat.

Stone Bridge's victory was built upon strong performances by Tori Severin, who took second in the All-Around with a 35.950, and Amy Fissmer, who was fourth in the All-Around with a 34.600. Severin won on the bars with a 9.375.

Thomas Jefferson's Chrissy Franzel was third in the All-Around with a 35.075.

Any athlete top eight in an event or scoring 9.0 or better will move on to next week's Northern Region meet at Lake Braddock which will be held Feb. 12, starting at 3 p.m.
