Purcellville (Oct. 22, 2008) - The Loudoun Valley High School volleyball team opened the AAA Cedar Run District tournament Tuesday with a sweep over Liberty, 25-6, 25-17, 25-11.
The regular-season champion Vikings improved to 19-2 on the year and advanced to Thursday's semifinals where they will face host Battlefield. Regardless of how they do in the tournament, the Vikes will advance to the Northwest Region tournament with the Cedar Run tournament champion (or runner-up if Valley wins) also advancing.
In Tuesday's match, Lindsey Phipps had the hot service hand with 19 points. She also had 10 digs, five blocking combinations and five kills. Ally Blaine (13 assists) and Nicole Bennett (11 assists) combined for 24 assists for Valley, setting the likes of Morgan Clark (10 kills), Hayley Grabner (6 kills), Taylor Maddox (5 kills), Phipps and Danielle Caputo (4 kills).
On defense for LV, Kristen Martin had 13 digs and Maddox and Bennett, added nine and eight.
Loudoun Valley started the Cedar Run District season with a 5-set loss at Fauquier and then the Vikes won their next 13 district games including wins last week over Culpeper and Stonewall Jackson. Valley also defeated Northwest Region power Forest Park on Saturday to finish the regular season, 25-12, 25-22, 25-20.
Blaine dished out 20 assists in that win and Bennett added 14. Clark led the attackers with 14 kills followed by Phipps (12), Grabner (4) and Maddox (4). On the servie, Maddox had 10 service points and she had 14 digs. Martin also had 14 digs and Phipps added five blocking combinations while Leah MacSwain added four.
