Magruder senior diver Brittany Powell has had an influx of young challengers this year.
There’s Whitman sophomore Emily Schmidt, Walter Johnson freshman Annie Kastler and sophomore Katie Collins to name a few.
But in the end, Powell continues to make the biggest – or smallest – splash. Powell ran away with her second straight Montgomery County girl’s diving championship Friday evening, scoring 388.9 points compared to 321.15 by Schmidt and 319 by Churchill junior Alexandra Stanton.
“I’m a senior now and it’s my year,†said Powell, who hasn’t been defeated all year. “I wanted to finish up the season well.â€
Powell, who is also the defending Metros champion, said she was a bit nervous before Friday’s competition but calmed her nerves with a song her sister downloaded on her Ipod and by joking with teammates.
She didn’t show any apprehension on the board, where she nailed her first dive for an average score of 8.5.
Powell, who will dive for Harvard next year, placed third at counties her sophomore year and second at Metros. Now, after winning both last season, she has her sights set on breaking the Metros meet record this year.
But even if she doesn’t accomplish that, it’s going to be difficult to anyone to stop her from winning.
“She’s pretty hard to beat,†Schmidt said.
“She’s improved so much over the years and she’s really good,†Stanton added.
PAINT BRANCH’S SHINHOLSER UPSETS STANTON
Churchill senior Michael Stanton knew his toughest competition would be Paint Branch junior Logan Shinholser.
Even Stanton has noticed how much time and effort Shinholser has put into improving his diving.
That work paid off Friday at Shinholser upset Stanton’s undefeated season by scoring 425.85 points to claim the county title.
Churchill freshman Timothy Faerber came in second with 396.7 points and Stanton finished third with 394.4.
