Manhassett High School Head Lacrosse Coach Bill Cherry and Garden City High School Head Lacrosse Coach Steve Finnell have been named to coach the East Regional team in this summer’s adidas National High School Lacrosse Classic.
The inaugural event is scheduled for July 18-20, 2008 in Germantown, Maryland will showcase the top high school underclassmen lacrosse players in the country
Coach Cherry comments on his selection. “I am honored to be one of the coaches selected to coach in this inaugural National Lacrosse competition. To have all (8) the regions of the country in one venue is just an outstanding idea. It will give everyone in the lacrosse community an opportunity to see how far and wide the sport has spread and I’m sure they will be amazed at the talent level from all regions.”
The event holds meaning for the players. “This event will afford underclassmen from all over the country an opportunity to compete and measure themselves against the top players in the nation. It will also be an outstanding recruiting tool for the colleges to see all the regions represented in one tournament” says Cherry.
With a coaching record of 185-46 prior to the 2008 season, Coach Cherry, a member of the Manhasset Hall of Fame has guided his teams to win 10 Long Island championships. Manhasset High School was ranked 4th in the nation according to Laxpower. Coach Steve Finnell, has a coaching record prior to the2008 season of 18-3 was Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach at Duke University in 1997-1996.
In 1997, he helped guide the Duke Blue Devil Lacrosse team the NCAA Division 1 Final Four tournament. Coach Finnell’s Garden City High School team was the 2007 Nassau County Class B Champion and ranked as high as 11 in the nation according to Laxpower.
