LONG ISLAND: adidas ANNOUNCES EAST REGION TEAM ROSTER

Talent rich region sends its best to challenge the best. (UPDATED!)

Published: 06/30/2008

The top players from Long Island were selected by a committee of, New York high school coaches after a three hour evaluation process at Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New York that included individual position drills, time-testing for speed and a series of scrimmages.  Registration for the on-field evaluation was open to all high school underclassmen players entering grades 10,11 and 12.

The adidas National Lacrosse Classic features the top high school underclassmen lacrosse players in the country.  Sixteen regional teams, including Long Island, will compete for a National Championship, July 18-20, 2008 at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, Maryland to determine the best region of high school lacrosse players in the United States.

The winner of the adidas National Lacrosse Classic will play against Canada for the Brogden Cup in Orlando, Florida December 5-8, 2008 to determine the best region of high school lacrosse players in North America.

Head lacrosse coach of Manhasset High school, Bill Cherry and Garden City High School head lacrosse coach Steve Finnell have been named to coach the East Regional team in this summer’s adidas National High School Lacrosse Classic. The two coaches are joining together to lead the Long Island team in the adidas National Games. Historically, Garden City and Manhasset high schools represent the longest uninterrupted public high school lacrosse rivalry in the nation. This past lacrosse season, the annual boys' varsity lacrosse game marked the 117th meeting between the two schools since 1935. In recent years crowds of more than 2,000 have been the norm for the Woodstick Classic, and games have been highly competitive. Twelve of the last 16 contests have been decided by two goals or less, and three went to overtime, according to Jake White, Garden City High School Class of 1962 and statistician extraordinaire.

“I am honored to be one of the coaches selected to coach in this inaugural National Lacrosse competition. To have all (8) the regions of the country in one venue is just an outstanding idea. It will give everyone in the lacrosse community an opportunity to see how far and wide the sport has spread and I’m sure they will be amazed at the talent level from all regions.” Comments Coach Cherry.

The event holds meaning for the players. “This event will afford underclassmen from all over the country an opportunity to compete and measure themselves against the top players in the nation. It will also be an outstanding recruiting tool for the colleges to see all the regions represented in one tournament” says Cherry.
