Senior quarterback Sammy Von Paris rushed for two touchdowns, including the game winner up the middle in OT, to lead the visiting John Carroll Patriots to a 13-10 win over Severn in MIAA B Conference action. With the win, the Patriots, 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the conference, are making a run towards the B Conference championship. Von Paris finished with 82 rushing yards and completed six passes for 85 yards.
"We've added some new stuff, said Von Paris. The plays we put in this week worked very well."
"I don't know that I would call it a thrilling game," said John Carroll coach Keith Rawlings. "I think we played two quarters and an overtime period. We need to start playing four quarters of football and score when our Defense gives us the ball. It's a 'W' and we'll take it but we need to be better next week in order to beat Spalding"
On the 2nd play of the game Severn turned the ball over on their own 10 yard line and JC got its first scoring opportunity. However, JC could not take advantage and turned the ball over on downs. Later in the same quarter JC would return the favor on a fumble but Severn also was not able to take advantage.
The second quarter would belong to JC. The Admirals drove into John Carroll territory late in the quarter but junior Stephen St. Clair picked off a pass from Severn QB Jon Gren and returned the INT 23 yards to the Severn 25 yard line. Two plays later Von Paris connected with St.Clair on a screen pass for 20 yards to the Severn 5 yard line. Von Paris would give JC the first score of the game on a 2 yard dive. Erich Hart hit the PAT. St.Clair had three receptions for 63 yards and four carries for 21 yards on the day.
The Admirals (1-4, 0-3) struck back in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard run from senior quarterback Jon Gren to tie the game. Junior Richie Davis hit the PAT.
"Jon Gren is one of those athletes every coach prays to get," Severn coach Troy Wilson said. "He's great on his feet, he has a good arm and I wish I had a few more like him."
The Admirals were moving the ball again when Jr Sam Chell stepped in front of the intended receiver and picked of Gren to end the threat.
Regulation ended in a 7-7 tie.
Severn took the ball first in OT but the JC defense held them and the Admirals were forced to settle for a field goal. Richie Davis converted a 24-yard field goal in overtime to make it 10-7 Severn.
JC got the ball and Von Paris scored on the first play to seal the win for JC 13-10.
The JC Defense was lead by Sr. Matt Giannelli, 17 tackles, Soph. Tyler Ray,
12 Tackles and Sr. Ethan Reese with 10. The Defense had three take always, interceptions by Sam Chell, Steve St.Clair and a fumble recovered by Kenny Filiaggi.
