In an early season
showdown in the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Association's 15 and under
league, the Maryland Orioles defeated the Maryland Hillcats at Babe Ruth Field on the campus of Cardinal Gibbons School on
Wednesday night, 8-2.
The Orioles were led by shortstop Brent
Jacobs, who had two hits, an RBI and scored a run, first baseman Danny McGee, who collected two hits, scored a run and collected a RBI, and Braden Goughenow, who
had a triple, two RBI and a run scored.
Brent McKay hurled four scoreless innings to get the win. He got help
from Kenny Stalnaker in the fifth, as the two combined to scatter
seven hits. The Hillcats got two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to prevent a
shutout. Tanner Ausherman led the Hillcat offense with two doubles.
Goughenow put the O's on top in the bottom of the second with a booming
triple that plated McGee, who singled to start the inning. McGee scored
the second Oriole run on a sac-fly to right off the bat of Stalnaker.
The O's got two more in the third, with three straight singles by
Vail, Jacobs and McGee. The also added three more in the fifth.
R.T. Vail, the Cardinal Gibbons Junior Varsity catcher this spring, was right at
home, Vail had a single and scored two runs for coach Frank O'Devin.
"We have a good hitting team," said Vail. "Most of our players are from
here (Gibbons), North County and Old Mill."
The O's won their fourth straight to remain undefeated in the league, and the Hillcats lost for the first time to fall to 3-1.
"They have a good team," said Goughenow. "But we played well tonight."
The Orioles will put their winning streak on the line at home in a
