The Churchville Lightning 16-under team knocked off the Philly Flash on Saturday 7-2 in the USSSA Mid-Atlantic Tournament at the Ripken Sports Academy in Aberdeen.
The Lightning, based out of Harford County, considered his tourament to be sort of a home game for them. Parents, friends and supporters hung out for the entire day as Churchville competed in three games.
In the first game, the Harford girls defeated the Richmond Ruckus 11-1. Despite falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of the second contest, the Lightning responded to take the decision.
Trailing 2-0 after one inning, Churchville used a three-run second inning to take a lead they would not lose. Savannah Snyder lead off the second with a deep shot over the center-field fence for a solo-home run to cut the Flash lead to 2-1. Eden McMillan followed with a walk and Lindsey Kuczak had a bunt single.
With two on base and one out in the inning, Stephanie White walked to load the bases and put Phill's back against the wall. The Flash's starting pitcher walked Bethany Gwiazda which scored McMillian to tie the game at 2-2. Jessica Cook followed the walk with a bloop single into right field that scored Kuczak for the third run of the inning.
Lightning starting pitcher Hannah Musick found her groove and did not allow another run in the next five innings of play. Musick was unhittable even when she knocked down a comebacker up the mound that almost hit her in the face. She smiled and continued to throw strikes.
The score remained 3-2 until the top of the fifth when Churchville exploded for another three runs and added another in the top of the sixth to close out the game.
