Chantilly's boys' lacrosse team rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Oakton, 8-6, and capture its first Northern Region championship in school history. With the win -- the Chargers' third over the Cougars this season -- they remain undefeated on the season headed into next week's Virginia AAA state tournament.

With 4 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the game, senior midfielder Kevin Oneill took a pass from senior defender Mike Quigg and scored, putting the Chargers in the lead for the first time all night. Two minutes later senior attack Corey Aferiat beat the goaltender for one final score as the clock wound to :00 and Chantilly secured its victory.

The Cougars held a one-goal lead six different times during the game but each time the Chargers answered to knot the score.

Senior midfielder Rob Koster scored two go-ahead goals for Oakton in the third quarter, but Charger senior attack Joe Fratter answered each goal with one of his own. Fratter added a third score early in the fourth quarter to give him a hat-trick and tie the game at 5.

Aferiat also scored again in the third quarter, as did Chantilly senior midfielder Jake Nolan and sophomore attack Brendan Waters.

"They got challenged tonight" Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick said of his players. "They rose to that challenge and they were fortunate to come away with a win. This will give us a lot of momentum going into states."

The first round of the state tournament begins Saturday, May 31st.

Chantilly, as a top seed, will host the No. 3 seed from the Northwest Region while Oakton will play the No. 2 seed from Region II with the site and time to be determined. Annandale, which defeated Westfield in the consolation game to earn the Northern Region's third and final berth, will travel to face at the No. 1 seed from the Northwest Region.
