(Sept. 10, 2008) - Both Loudoun Valley and Freedom picked up volleyball wins on Wednesday night with the Vikings sweeping Osbourn Senior in AAA Cedar Run District play and the Eagles edging Manassas Park in five sets in non-district action.
The Vikes, after needing five to defeat Battlefield on Tuesday, cruised against the Eagles from Manassas, winning 25-16, 25-8, 25-18. Morgan Clark with 12 kills (.500) and Lindsay Phipps with five kills (.333) led attack ran by Ally Blaine (10 assists) and Nicole Bennett (7 assists).
Taylor Maddox had 14 service points for LV and Bennett added 10. Defensively, Maddox had seven digs (2.7) followed by Clark six (2.67), and Kristen Martin 5 (3.0). Phipps also had three blocking combinations for 1.5 points.
Freedom coach Dave Tsuda reports that his "young team found their fighting Eagle spirit early in the fourth game and pushed themselves to the end of the match.l"
The Eagles trailed 2-1 after falling in the first (25-23) and third (25-15) sets. Freedom had won the second set, 25-11. In the fourth set, Freedom prevented a loss with a 26-24 win and then the Eagles tamed the Cougars in the fifth and final set, winning it 15-8.
Tsuda reports that the "team's energy was buoyed by co-captain Morgan Kemp's strong serving performance of 19 points and 3 aces throughout the match."
Leading Freedom's attack was middle hitter Jenna Flanigin (9 kills and 10 blocks), and outside hitter Kaitlyn LaMantia (11 kills) also kept the pressure on the opponents with well placed hits.
Co-captain Kara Phung and Eboni Weeks led the team's energetic defense throughout the match in digs and getting service receives to the setter. As outside hitters, Phung contributed eight kills and Weeks added five kills.
It was a clean sweep for the South Riding gang as the Eagles freshmen won 2-0 (25-9, 25-17), as did the JV 2-0 (25-6, 25-21).
