Punahou 3, Pearl City 1
Moanalua 4, Iolani 2
Kamehameha-Kapalama 3, Kamehameha-Maui 1
A surprise on Day as the #1 and #2 seeds fall in the HHSAA Wally Yonamine Foundation State Baseball Championships.
#1 Pearl City, the only undefeated team entering the tournament, succumbed to the outstanding pitching of Punahou, losing 3-1. A team with high hopes could muster only 4 hits against starter Marcus Yoshii and freshman reliever Zachary Muenster. The Buff n Blu, playing their best baseball at the right time, scored 2 runs in the first inning which would be all they would need. They advance to the semi finals against ILH rival Kamehameha.
Muenster relived starter Yoshii in the 4th inning and dominated the Charger batters. He allowed only 2 batters to reach base in his 4 innings of work and struck out 3.
The #2 seeded Iolani Raiders did not fare any better as the lost to the surprise team on this year's tournament, the Moanalua Menehune, 3-2. Kela Marciel scored in the top of the 7th to narrow the Menehune lead to 1 run on a sacrifice fly by Jarrett Arakawa. But on the same play, Breleand Alamadova was thrown out at 3rd base trying to advance on the Arakawa fly ball for the 3rd out.
Moanalua will play Kailua in the other semi final. The semi final match ups ensure that it will be an ILH v OIA championship game on Saturday.
