Ashburn (Dec. 26, 2008) - Sometimes basketball can be so simple. Get to the foul line and then convert your free throw attempts, for example, is  a good way to be successful and that is the path that all four victorious teams took in Friday night's first round action in the Leesburg Honda Holiday Basketball Tournament at Broad Run and Stone Bridge.

On the boys side at Stone Bridge, both AA Broad Run and Dominion, made fewer field goals than AAA Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge but that didn't stop Broad Run from defeating the Vikings, 70-61, in the first game of the doubleheader on the strength of 20 of 24 from the line and then Dominion made it a Dulles District sweep with a 77-75 win over the host Bulldogs in a game in which the Titans went to the line 35 times, making 23, while Stone Bridge only got to the line 18 times.

Over at Broad Run it was more of the same as the host Spartans, scored just eight field goals to Stone Bridge's 13 but Broad Run's 20 of 32 night from the foul line was the difference in a 45-44 win. In the other girls game, Loudoun Valley and Herndon each hit 17 field goals but the Vikes hot hand from the foul line, going 18 of 22, again spelled the margin of victory in the 54-49 game as Herndon converted on just 14 of 28.

In the first boys game, Broad Run senior Didier Saidi took advantage of the relatively balmy weather on Christmas Day to shoot around outside and it paid off as he was on fire from the outside early, hitting three 3-pointers in the first half as he scored 13 of his team-high 17 points. Sophomore Taylor Johnson added 13 points and senior Breon Earl added 10 with senior Greg Snow and junior Ahmad Zafar each scoring eight for the Spartans.

Valley was led by senior Connor Trombly's game-high 20 points and senior Jamie Clarke added 19 but no other Viking score more than six points in the defeat.

Broad Run opened up a 36-23 halftime lead and maintained that in the third quarter, moving into the final quarter with a 51-38 advantage. The Spartans then took care of the contest from the foul line, making 15 of 16 from the line in the final quarter to keep the Vikes at bay.

The Spartans are now 8-1 on the season under first-year coach John Costello, improving already on last year's 7-16 campaign. Loudoun Valley falls to 1-4 on the year.

In the second boys game, Stone Bridge opened with its up-tempo transition working nicely as the Bulldogs scored 21 in the first quarter to lead 21-14 but Titan senior DeAndre Albritton did a nice job of controlling the tempo in the game and the despite the fact he battled leg cramps, he finished with a game-high 30 points. Brothers Gregory and Steven Smucker combined to score 25 points for Dominion with Steven going 7 of 10 from the foul line.

The Bulldogs got 26 points from sophomore Nik Brown and 17 from junior Richie Berry.

Dominion took over in the third quarter with a 21-11 advantage to erase Stone Bridge's 40-36 halftime lead and while Dominion never trailed in the final quarter, Stone Bridge made it interesting with a hard-fought run in the final minutes but fell just short. The Bulldogs rebounded a missed free throw in the final seconds, down by two, but the Titans defense came up with a steal to prevent Stone Bridge from trying to tie the game or win it.

The Titans improve to 6-2, the best start in school history while Stone Bridge falls for the third straight time after opening the year 3-1.

At Broad Run High School, Loudoun Valley and Herndon played a tight game with the biggest lead of the night coming when the Hornets were ahead, 6-2, at the start of the contest. Loudoun Valley used solid defense and patience on offense to outlast the Hornets. Chrystal Oden lead the Vikes, offensively and defensively, with 13 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Wendy Roth chipped in with 11 points and seven boards. The Vikings shot 44 percent from the floor and 82 percent (18 for 22) from the charity stripe.

Herndon was led by 18 points by Phyliss Martin.

The Vikes improve to 5-2 on the year while the Hornets are now an even 4-4.

In the second game, Broad Run got 12 points each from Maggie Andricosky and Caitlin Hunter and eight from Haley Johnson. Hunter also had 11 rebounds.

Cori Prince led the Bulldogs with 11 points. With  the Bulldogs inbounding with 1.9 seconds left and down by three, Prince was fouled on a long heave and went to the line with Stone Bridge trailing by three. She hit the first two free throws but missed on the third attempt to send the game into overtime.

It was the second time this season that Broad Run had defeated Stone Bridge and former Spartan assistant coach Chris Jones who took over the SB program this season. Broad Run improves to 3-5 while SB falls to 2-5.

Free Throws: On the boys side it was a Fairmont State reunion as three of the four coaches all played at the same time as the West Virginia school with Stone Bridge coach Sonny Green a freshman while Dominion's Steve Douglas was a senior and Loudoun Valley's Chad Dawson was a junior ... How many state title winning coaches can you spot at one tournament? Well, at least, four were roaming the stands Friday, though none were won in basketball: Stone Bridge football coach Mickey Thompson (2007 title), Stone Bridge assistant athletic director Mike Skinner, who won a football state title at Centreville in 2000, Stone Bridge boys soccer coach Randy May, who won three state titles at West Springfield (2001, 2002, 2004) and Broad Run girls soccer coach Claire Collins (2008 title) ... It could also make the case for a good running back combine at the tournament as Broad Run's Breon Earl and Dominion's DeAndre Reaves were on the court and Broad Run's T.J. Peeler and Heritage's Ross Madison were in the stands ... You have to give Stone Bridge and Broad Run credit as they know how to throw a tournament with great hospitality for the players and even the media, officials and administrators. The food provided by The Original Steakhouse, Dominio's Pizza and Manhattan Pizza was first-rate and the LPS Monkey swears he saw Washington Post "ace" reporter Paul Tenorio heading for "thirds" of the ribs! Tenorio, by the way, is heading to Philadelphia this weekend to cover the Cowboys-Eagles big game. Hopefully he won't miss any big plays while in line for Hoagies!
