Douglas Freeman didn't need doubles defeating homestanding Prince George 5-1 yesterday in the Central Region Girls Tennis quarterfinals.
The Rebels (14-1), ranked second in the final DigitalSports Top 10, will move on to face the James River-Atlee winner Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cosby High.
"I thought we played well today, all the way down the line," Rebels coach
Larry Parpart said.
At No. 2, Freeman senior
Elizabeth Sutphin took down
Stephanie Edlin 6-2, 6-2.
Shortly after, Freeman's top player, sophomore
Elena Rusu, defeated
Elizabeth Walsh 6-3, 6-1.
After that, three matches finished within literally a minute of each other.
At No. 3,
Shana Temple of Prince George (13-3) claimed the Royals' point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over
Cabot Hunt.
Then Freeman stacked up two more wins, one from
Lindsay Teague at No. 5 over
Katy Cash 6-1, 6-2. Then
Carrie Arnold won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 over
Heather Lewis.
The longest match ended not too much after the others.
Freeman's
Kelsey Burke outlasted
Sarah Lamp 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 to clinch the match for Freeman.
"I knew they would be very good," longtime PG coach
Paul Cash said. "I only have one senior (Edlin). We lost three of our top four from last year.
"I'm really happy with what we're doing. A lot of people didn't expect us to do this."
