Loudoun County, Virginia
--
At the pre-game ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of Park View's AA state baseball championship in 1984, 22-year Patriots' coach
Mike Nunally works around the imaginary batter on his ceremonial first pitch. His ceremonial second pitch was right on the money, though.
No. 9 -- Badr Back-to-Back Blocks
1 2
Northern Region, Virginia
-- D.C. United keeper
Samir Badr, a junior at Robinson, blocks shots by Real Madrid sensations
Koke and
Jaime Sansegundo within minutes of each other. Los Merengues came away with a 1-0 win, though, in this marquee Tiffany Cup opening game. 1 2
No. 8 -- JessiKa Mattia
Prince George's County, Maryland -- Gwynn Park junior
Jessica Mattia struck out 14 batters -- of the 15 required outs -- in her team's 10-0, five-inning win over Largo on Wednesday.
No. 7 -- Simmons Has Shotty
Prince William County, Virginia
-- Woodbridge's
Isaiah Simmons, after winning the discus at the Running Shore City County Championships with a throw of 149'3", set a meet record in the shot put at 56'8." Simmons won the Virginia AAA indoor shotput championship this winter.
No. 6 -- Savage Fields and Fires
W.C.A.C., D.C./Md./Va. -- On Thursday night in Fairfax, St. John's defeated Paul VI, 8-5. But in a game riddled with errors, Panther SS
Dan Savage made this flashy play on a shot back up the middle by Cadet SS
Nate Meiners.
No. 5 -- Vattuone Rings 'Em Up
Montgomery County, Maryland -- Northwest senior Dominique Vattuone gets the Sherwood batter looking with this filthy, "twelve-six" curveball as the Jaguars knocked off the defending 4A state champion Warriors, 7-1. Vattuone had six K's, while scattering six hits.
No. 4 -- Spartans Respond
Phillips Forces Fly Out, Bulldogs Win
Loudoun County/Northern Region, Virginia
-- For the first time since 2006, Broad Run lost a game. Stone Bridge beat the two-time defending Virginia AA state champions -- and defending No. 1 team in the nation -- 4-2, on Monday. Bulldog pitcher
Cassie Phillips recorded the complete-game win.
Haley's Comet
Loudoun County, Virginia
-- Spartan senior
Haley Johnson finds redemption in Broad Run's next game with this ninth-inning, solo home run, which proved the game-winner, in her team's 3-2 road win over Loudoun County.
No. 3 -- Costello, Persohn Yardwork 1 2
Prince William County, Virginia
-- On the road against defending Cedar Run District champion Battlefield, Stonewall Jackson jumped on the board early -- and often. Raider pitcher
Mike Costello brought the lumber on this first-inning, three-run blast and was followed by
Corey Persohn's second-inning yard work, as part of Stonewall's 20-4 win.
No. 2 -- Radalet Acrobatics
Northern Region, Virginia
-- Entering its Monday game against McLean, Stone Bridge had not lost at home since 2007. And through 67-and-a-half minutes, the Bulldogs had their patented one-nill margin in hand. But two Highlanders goals -- and one
Sam Radalet backflip later -- McLean went a leg-up on Stone Bridge in the Liberty District.
No. 1 -- Jordan-esque
Montgomery County, Maryland --
In the fifth overtime between Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Whitman, the Vikings capitalize on a last-second counterattack when
Patrick Slawta finds
Jordan Karr for a goal and an 8-7 win.
