Sophomore pitcher Chris Fusco allowed one earned run in a complete-game effort and senior shortstop Jake Wechsler scored the game-winning run on a steal and errant throw in the sixth inning to power the Key School baseball team to a 5-4 win over host Towson Catholic Thursday in a MIAA C Conference contest.
Fusco, a left-hander hurler, struck out four and induced eight groundball outs, including four back to the mound. Wechsler scored the decisive run stealing second with two out. The catcher's throw went into left center field and allowed Wechlser to score on the play as the throw from center field was late and off target.
Wechsler went 2-for-3 for the game with a double and a triple and a walk. Fusco tripled in a run in the first inning and singled in a run in the fifth.
The win was Key's second straight on the field and third overall (Indian Creek forfeited Friday's contest) after dropping its first 10 games of the season. The Obezags had their best defensive effort of the season, including throwing out two would-be base stealers in the same play as Fusco picked off a runner at first base and after the rundown, Wechsler fired home to throw out the runner trying to score from third.
"We only had nine [players] for the game and all nine of them contributed something whether it be a walk, a great catch in the outfield, which we had several of from Harrison Barton and Alex Boisvert, or a player taking an extra base," said first-year Key manager James Peters. "This was by far our best game of the season. It was a great way to end our league season."
Barton, the team's starting catcher, played a flawless center field despite being hampered by a dislocated finger that kept him from being behind the plate. Boisvert, on his birthday, made a crucial stabbing catch in left field to help seal the win.
