Liberty District Final played at Langley HS, McLean, VA

It was a beautiful night in McLean at Langley High School, as the Stone Bridge Bulldogs and Madison Warhawks met for the third straight time in the Liberty District Championship. However, things were a bit different this year as the Bulldogs were the home team, entering as the regular season champ and the number one seed. Head Coach Sam Plank had Sr RHP Ty Weaver on the mound, while Head Coach Mark "Pudge" Gjormand countered with Sr righty Matt Zepp, who defeated the Bulldogs 6-3 on May 8.

Kyle McIntyre led off the game with a fly out to Jr LF Johnny Bladel. Casey Turner was safe on an infield throwing error by Sr SS Mike Stancik. Brig Tison hit a comebacker to Weaver. He pivoted and fired a low throw to Stancik, who forced Turner. His relay throw to first was late, but the umpire ruled interference on Turner at second and the Bulldogs got an unusual double play. Sr C Brian Wheaton flew out. Jr RF Michael Prince doubled down the line. Bladel was safe on an infield error, as Prince moved to third on the play. Stancik hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Prince for the first run. But everyone was safe as Tison dropped the throw from TJ Ehrsham. Jr 1B Patrick Thompson struck out. Sr 3B Tyler Basso struck out to end the inning.

In the second, Alex Jacquez singled to right. But Andrew Shrock hit the next pitch up the middle. Stancik scooped the grounder, touched second and fired to Thompson for the 6-3 double play. Ted Williams had a great 8 pitch at bat, but eventually flew out to Sr CF Matt Irwin to end the frame. Sr 2B Collin Pearson flew out. Fr DH J.J. White singled. Irwin singled with White stopping at second. Wheaton reached on a fielder's choice, as White was forced at third. Prince came through with his second double, plating Irwin. Bladel singled, scoring Wheaton. Stancik hit a comebacker to end the inning.

To start the third, Ricardo Perez lined out to Stancik. David Fathalakhani grounded to Basso. Matt Zepp walked. McIntyre flew out to Irwin to end the frame. The Bulldogs were able to extend the lead in the bottom of the inning. Coach Gjormand made a pitching change bringing in Andrew Schrock. Thompson was hit by a pitch. Basso walked. Pearson singled to left, with Thompson having to hold at third. With the bases loaded, White hit a combacker. Thompson was forced at the plate, White safe on a fielder's choice. Coach Plank brought Soph Dillon Berger to pinch run for White. Irwin delivered with a double, plating both Basso and Pearson. Wheaton hit a sac fly to right, scoring Berger. Prince was called out on strikes to end the inning.

In the fourth, Turner hit a comebacker to Weaver. Tison flew out to Irwin. Jacquez grounded out to Stancik to end the frame. Bladel singled. Stancik singled, with Bladel stopping at second. Thompson hit a line shot to first. Initially, it appeared that Stancik slid under the tag to avoid a double play. But after a conference by the umpires, Stancik was ruled out. Basso walked. Pearson grounded out to end the inning.

To start the fifth, Schrock struck out. Williams flew out to Bladel. Perez hit a ball in the hole. It skipped under Basso's glove, but Stancik made an athletic scoop and in one fluid motion fired a strike to Thompson to get Perez out at first ending the inning. White grounded out. Irwin singled. With Wheaton at the plate, Irwin stole second. Wheaton hit a bullet to third, which was scored as an error, as Irwin scampered home. Wheaton alertly took second base on the late throw to the plate. Prince picked up his third hit, a single scoring Wheaton. Bladel was safe on a fielder's choice, as Prince was forced at second. Stancik banged a double off the right field wall, plating Bladel. Thompson tripled, scoring Stancik. Basso hit a hot shot to first, with Fathalakhani making a great play flipping to Schrock for the third out.

In the sixth, Fathalakhani reached on a hit by pitch. Zepp hit a fly to Irwin. He briefly took his eye off the ball, which hit off his glove as Zepp reached on the error. Fathalakhani stopped at second. McIntyre flew out to Bladel. But the scoring threat was snuffed out as Turner hit into a Stancik to Pearson to Thompson double play. Coach Plank decided to give several reserves an at bat in the bottom of the sixth. Coach Gjormand also made a pitching change, putting lefty Ted Williams on the hill. Pat Piccolo walked. Bryce Williams was hit by a pitch. Russell Moore struck out. Alec Whys struck out. Spencer Rositano hit a comebacker to end the inning.

As the seventh started, Coach Plank re-entered all of the starters defensively. Tison flew out to Prince. Jacquez grounded to Basso, who made an outstanding play. Schrock walked . But the game ended in exciting fashion, as Matt Irwin caught a sinking line drive off of pinch hitter Paul Gongaware's bat to end the game.

The Bulldogs move to 19-3 on the year and capture their first Liberty tournament championship. Weaver goes to 8-0 on the year and needed only 77 pitches for the complete game one hitter. With tonight's victory, the Bulldogs are the Liberty #1 seed entering the Northern Region tournament. They will host the TC Williams Titans in a first round matchup on Friday, May 23. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00PM.
