Purcellville (Jan. 18, 2009) - For the second time this season it was all Loudoun Valley in a match-up of the area's two AAA basketball programs as the Vikings swept Stone Bridge Saturday night in a girls/boys doubleheader on the eve of exam break.

The Valley girls started the sweep with a 49-39 win and the boys finished it with a 63-54 victory over the Bulldogs.

Both programs were coming off hard Friday night contests in their respective districts with the Valley boys and girls having swept Liberty in Cedar Run action and the Bulldog boys and girls having fallen to South Lakes.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Valley girls started slow but managed to pull out a 49-39 victory.

It was a 19-18 Valley lead at the half before the Vikes cushioned their lead by out-scoring the Bulldogs 13-7 in the third quarter.

Chrystal Oden scored seven of her 11 points in the third quarter. Stone Bridge kept the game close until the closing minute when Valley was able to get ahead at the foul line.

Valley senior Jess Mullen led all scorers with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kayla Sweet added 11 points and Brea Calhoun grabbed eight rebounds for Valley.

Stone Bridge was paced by Rachael Pascale’s 10 points, including two 3-pointers.

In the boys game, it was Stone Bridge ahead 39-36 midway through the third quarter when the Stone Bridge offense stalled and the Vikes took off on a 16-1 run to take a comfortable 52-40 lead into the final quarter.

Cody Mangano, who finished with a game-high 16 points, ignited the run by completing a three-point play. Viking freshman John Yoxthimer then scored back-to-back baskets, one on a put-back and another in the transition.

Stone Bridge called timeout to try and slow down Valley but the Vikes continued its run with Ryan Mueller making two free throws followed by Viking point guard Drew MacMahon blowing by his defender to the basket. Django DeGree then made a circus scoop shot under the basket and to the delight of the home crowd was fouled on the play. He made the free throw to give Valley a 50-40 edge. Mueller then out-hustled the Bulldogs for a loose ball near the basket and put it in to complete the run.

Brian Slay was a force inside for Stone Bridge in the fourth quarter, scoring six of his 11 points, but the Bulldogs couldn't put a run together. Nate Ingersoll led Stone Bridge with 15 points, nine of which came in the first quarter as Stone Bridge opened a 13-8 lead.Jerel Wright score eight pionts for the Bulldogs and Michael Prince added seven.

DeGree was the only other Viking in double digits with 10 but four other players had seven or more points including Yoxthimer (nine), MacMahon (eight), Mueller (eight) and Jamie Clarke (seven).

The Vikings are idle until Friday when they travel to Manassas to take on district foe Osbourn Park in a girls and boys doubleheader. The Bulldogs are home and away against district foe Woodson.
