Behind dominant performances from junior libero Mikaela Whitaker and junior outside hitter Kelly Milione, the Battlefield Bobcats volleyball team took a 3-1 victory over Stonewall Jackson on Tuesday night to advance to the Cedar Run District Volleyball Tournament semifinals, 25-22, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23.

"We are one step closer," said Whitaker after a match.

Whitaker recorded 33 digs to help the Bobcats stave off an explosive Stonewall Jackson offensive attack, while Milione led the way on offense, recording a game-high 23 kills against the Raiders. Senior Lesley Chambers recorded 11 kills, while senior Nikkisha Walker added eight. Junior setter Alyssa Caudle combined with senior setter Virginia Hyer for 43 assists during the four-game match.

"We have been tenacious throughout the season. That is our key word – tenacious," said Battlefield head coach Chris Lem.

That's not to say that the Bobcats' didn't need a little prodding to unleash their tenacity. In three of the four games, Battlefield found themselves facing an uphill battle against the Raiders after dropping behind early. In two of those games, the Bobcats ended up with a victory.

In game two, Battlefield fell behind 19-11 before scoring 14 of the final 18 points to earn the 25-23 win.

"I think that we play better when we are down," said Walker of the game two comeback. "We realized that we need to pick it up. That is what we did."

Battlefield's quarterfinal game against Stonewall Jackson was the third meeting of the two teams this season. The Raiders took the first game on Sept. 23, in a three-game sweep. The next meeting came last Thursday, with the Bobcats winning a marathon five-game match, 3-2.

"I think that we realized how good we are and we shouldn’t be losing like that," said Walker of the Bobcats two victories over Stonewall Jackson compared to the first time the two teams met. "We need to give it our all every time and that’s what we did tonight."

It was Walker's game four ace that sealed the victory for the Bobcats.

"Don’t think about not getting it over. Just get it over and get it in play," Walker remembers telling herself before the serve. "It hit the ground and it felt so good."

Note: The Cedar Run District Tournament Semifinals will be held at Battlefield High School on Oct. 23. The doubleheader will start at 4 p.m.
