Wakefield senior Johnathan Ford went to work early and often as he led his Warriors to an 80-60 victory over the Edison Eagles on Wednesday.
"It was a team effort," Ford said. "The way we play, we get up-and-down and we get games like this pretty easily when a team can't run with us. When we move the ball around, it's hard to beat us. And that's what tonight was."
The Eagles had no answer for Ford all night, as he finished with a game-high 27 points. He also showed brilliant flashes of versatility by not only scoring, but also dishing out many assists and pulling down numerous rebounds.
Edison did cling to a two-point lead after one quarter, but the Warriors turned up the intensity on defense and held the Eagles to only 12 points in the second quarter.
Wakefield also spread the ball around nicely with six players scoring in the period.
"We have to play as a team, we have to keep everything constant, we can't let anything change [and] we can't get selfish," Ford said. "We have to play together.
"And if we keep playing together, then I think we'll beat anybody by 20."
Ford combined with sophomore Thomas Taylor (10 points), and senior Corey Levenberry (11 points) for 21 of the Warriors' 29 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Wakefield's 29 points in the quarter matched Edison's first-half score.
Edison junior Nick Muldrow (11 points) ended the game with a very long three-point attempt near half court that he swooshed through the net. It was his second buzzer beater of the night as Muldrow also ended the first half with a baseline three-pointer as time expired.
