Bears enter win column by beating Lunas

By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer

WAILUKU --- Football games involving Baldwin and Lahainaluna high schools always turn out to be hard-hitting affairs.

That was true again on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium in front of about 5,000 fans --- evenly split --- but the Bears survived a contest that saw both teams struggle with different aspects of their games for a 27-19 victory.

The win was Baldwin's first of the season and evened its Maui Interscholastic League record at 1-1, tied with King Kekaulike and Maui High in the Division I standings. The Lunas fell to 1-2 and a full game behind Kamehameha Maui (1-0) in the Division II race.

''It always is, actually, a hard-hitting game,'' Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos said after his team beat the Lunas for the seventh straight time since 2005. ''Lahainaluna, they have a great coaching staff, have a great team and their kids are always disciplined. I told our boys that they are going to get better every week and it showed tonight. We beat a very good team tonight.''
