When the Osbourn Park cheerleading team took second place in last week’s Prince William All-County meet last week, Yellow Jackets head coach Jessica Turch knew that her squad was on the verge of something special. After few extended practices over the weekend to make some minor tweaks, the Yellow Jackets entered Wednesday night’s Cedar Run District Cheerleading Championships confident that they could bring home Osbourn Park’s first district title in 13 years.

“We really spent a lot of time over the weekend
with some extended practices, really cleaning it up and trying to add a
bit of difficulty,” said Turch (full interview). “Our goal tonight was to hit a clean routine and we
did that.”

As the top four places were announced, the Yellow Jackets sat in a circle on the mat, closing their eyes and clutching each other’s hands. After the fourth-place Battlefield Bobcats and the third-place Liberty Eagles were announced, the team began to shake with excitement. When neighborhood rival Osbourn was announced as the runner-up, the Yellow Jackets’ circle bubbled with anticipation.

“It was hard to hold in all of the excitement,” said Osbourn Park co-captain Jordan English.

When Yellow Jackets finally heard their name, the circle exploded (video).

“[It feels] amazing. It’s been four years and we finally got it. We deserve it,” said senior Stephanie Ball.

The Yellow Jackets will look to carry over their momentum at the Northwest Region Competition on Nov. 1 at Franklin County High School.

Mascot Madness: While the Osbourn Park cheerleading squad took the top spot during the competition, OP’s world-famous dancing Yellow Jacket fell prey to host-school Liberty’s dancing Eagle in a brief (but intense) dance-off. We’ll see how the Yellow Jacket responds on Nov. 1.
