The Gar-Field Indians cheerleading team took home their fifth-consecutive Cardinal District title on Thursday night at Potomac Senior High School, edging out runners-up Forest Park, Woodbridge and C.D. Hylton. The Indians may have gotten used to wearing the district over the past half-decade, but that doesn’t make this year’s victory any less sweet.

“It’s the next best thing to child birth and marriage,” said head coach Nikia Hovey (full interview), who became emotional clutching her team’s first-place trophy. “It feels amazing. This team has had their ups and downs. Their hearts poured out on the floor tonight. They have worked so hard and they have carried on the tradition of Cardinal District champions and I could not be a prouder coach of this program.”

With Gar-Field cheerleading alumni rooting the squad on from the stands, the Indians nailed their first routine to advance to the four-team second round. Another perfect routine in the second round sealed the deal for the Indians, who finished third at the Prince William All-County Cheerleading Competition earlier in the month, best out of all Cardinal District teams. Coming into the competition, however, the Indians were sure to take nothing for granted.

“We don’t ever second-guess who we are up against,” said Hovey. “We came back [after All-County], we added difficulty, we cleaned it up. They came out, they sold the routine, they fought for what they had to fight for out on that floor. They knew that this was their title, but they knew not to second-guess anyone in the Cardinal District.”

The Indians, along with Forest Park, Woodbridge and C.D. Hylton will move onto the Northwest Region Competition Nov. 1 at Franklin County High School. The Indians finished second in the competition last year, en route to a fourth-place finish at the AAA Virginia State Competition.

“Gar-Field has gotten second since I have been a coach of this program,” said Hovey. “I am looking to take it all the way this year.”
