Cross Country: Northwest Region Meet

Following their 2008 Cedar Run District Championship, Osbourn Park girls cross country team took home the Northwest Region team title on Thursday afternoon at the Panorama Farms 5K Course in Charlottesville. Led by strong performances by Ariel Karabinus (2nd, 19:16.49) and Cedar Run individual winner Kayla Tyrell (4th, 19:28.26), the Yellow Jackets finished with 57 points, beating out Albemarle (76 points), Mountain View (110) and Loudoun Valley (112). With her second-place finish, Karabinus now has a pair of top-two finishes during her three-year career at Osbourn Park. OP’s Ashley Wybersky (18th, 20:02.89), Brandy Wybersky (20th, 20:10.55) and Natalie Geleta (21st, 20:13.80) contributed top-21 finishes for the Yellow Jackets at the meet. Five of the top eight Prince William County runners were Yellow Jackets.

Gar-Field’s Lindsi Arrington, the 2008 Cardinal District individual champ, took home a sixth-place finish. Battlefield‘s Julia Zewe (8th, 19:44.61), Potomac’s Debra Baner (12th, 19:51.67) and Woodbridge’s Michelle Britto (25th, 20:22.25) and Erin Rolaf (26th, 20:22.25) all finished with top-10 times out of Prince William runners. Arrington, Zewe and Baner will join the Yellow Jackets at the VHSL State meet at Great Meadows on Nov. 8.

On the boys’ side, the Battlefield Bobcats advanced to the program’s first-ever VHSL State meet with a fourth place finish. The Bobcats were led by Kyle Beach (11th, 16:50.57) and Matthew Shaughnessy (16:51.44), who each finished with All-Region times. The Bobcats, who finished with 94 points, came in behind Mountain View (53 points), Albemarle (75) and Colonial Forge (94). Osbourn Park’s Nolan Compton was the top area finisher at the event, taking seventh place with a time of 16:33.36. Compton will join the the Bobcats at the state meet next Saturday.
