Jessica Lowman couldn’t really process what had just happened. With time running out in the first overtime period during the Osbourn Park field hockey team’s Cedar Run District championship game against Liberty, Lowman took a pass from Annie Lynch and rifled it past the Eagles’ diving goalkeeper to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 win and the Cedar Run District trophy. Even before the ball hit the back of the cage, the Yellow Jackets’ fans began to celebrate, but Lowman looked stunned.
“I really can not believe that just happened,” said Lowman, who was swallowed by a crowd of her celebrating teammates after the goal. “Just because it is the championship game and you are putting all you can into it. Sometimes it doesn’t always come out the way that you would want it too but this time it did. I made the winning goal.”
Lowman’s goal ended an amazing run by the Yellow Jackets in the district tournament. Finishing the regular season with a 5-5 record, the Yellow Jackets beat Battlefield, a team that went 2-0 against Osbourn Park during the regular season, to advance to the finals.
“They were green at the beginning of the year. They were a work in progress,” said head coach Kate Thomas. “I don’t think that I’ve ever had team peak right when they were supposed to. I don’t know what we did. I’ll have to go back and look.”
The Yellow Jackets will host their first-round game in the Northwest Region tournament against Cardinal District runner up Woodbridge on Tuesday night.
