Football Playoff Preview: Osbourn vs. Varina, Day 1

Out of 10 AAA Prince William County football teams, the Osbourn Eagles are the last team standing. During the week leading up to the Eagles’ AAA Div. 6 VHSL semifinal matchup against undefeated Varina, Prince William DigitalSports will provide daily articles previewing the big game.

Day 1: How Varina Advanced

On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Devils captured the AAA Div. 6 Central Region title with a 17-14 win over Meadowbrook. Varina running back Trey Johnson rushed 17 times for 75 yards while Varina quarterback Hermon Norrell threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils to victory. Norrell found wide receiver Donald Upshaw on a fourth-and-five from Meadowbrook’s 12-yard line for the go-ahead score.

Varina almost didn’t make it to the Central Region finals, as they faced a tough challenger in fourth-ranked Hermitage in the first round. Varina, however, got an extra point block in overtime to secure the victory, 21-20. In the win, Johnson rushed for 223 yards and Smith caught five passes for 95 yards and a score.

The Blue Devils earned the top seed with a close 10-7 victory over Highland Springs on Nov. 7. The victory capped Varina’s perfect regular season and earned them the Capital District crown. Johnson rushed 28 times for 126 yards and the Blue Devils’ only score of the game. Cory *** hit a 20-yard field goal to give Varina the slim victory.

In recording a 12-0 record, the Blue Devils have amassed 351 points (29.25 per game), while allowing 129 (10.75). Like the Eagles, Varina is making their second state tournament appearance in the past three years. In 2006, the Blue Devils fell to Chantilly, 17-7, in the state semis. Osbourn won it all that year, blasting the Chargers, 42-20.
