Bruins Dominate Cardinal District Wrestling

The Forest Park wrestling team started the day with eight top seeds at the 2009 Cardinal District wrestling tournament and ended it with seven individual winners, two second-place finishers and head coach Seth Cameron’s first district championship. That certainly doesn’t mean, however, that it was easy day on the mat for the Bruins.

Just ask 119-pounder Jacob Kingett, who survived a 1-0 overtime victory against Woodbridge’s Greg Nelson. Or ask 215-pounder Josh Moore, whose escape in the final seconds of the third period earned him a finals victory over Woodbridge’s Evan Greenleaf, 20-19.

“In a district like this, it’s really wide-open, even matches,” said Cameron. “It’s really about who has the better weekend. Fortunately for us, this weekend we had a good one.”

Of course, the Bruins also had their fair share of dominant performances. Skyler Trumpower (103 pound), Isaac Riddle (112) and Sheridan Stackpole (140) all recorded finals victories by pinfall and 125-pounder Will Lloyd earned his gold medal with a 16-1 technical fall over C.D. Hylton’s Corey Angel. Patrick Budd (152) earned a 7-3 victory over Woodbridge’s Matt Smith.

“I lot of our wrestlers just went out there and battled,” said Cameron. “I told them to not be afraid, just go out there and throw it around and see what happens. They did today. They are a tight-knit group that works together all the time and one makes the other better. As one goes, they all go. I expected them to do well because they kind of ride off of each other.”

After three years as runners-up, the Bruins finally had their Cardinal District trophy. After the match, Cameron was already looking forward to the next round.

“We wrestled pretty well today, but it’s just districts,” he said. “It’s the first step in eventually getting to states and placing in states. That is really what our guy’s goal is. It’s not always about winning or losing here. It’s just about getting to the next level, getting your ticket stamped to make it to regions. Then you can live to fight again.”
