You’ll have to forgive the Loudoun Valley girls lacrosse team for starting slow against Battlefield in the Cedar Run District tournament finals at Osbourn Park on Thursday night. In their last six games, the Vikings have outscored opponents 119-14, including 40-3 in their first two games of the tournament. So when Battlefield threw the first punch, a goal by Morgan Clark two minutes into the game, it took the Vikings a little longer to fully respond.

“At the beginning of the game, they did a great job of taking us out of our game. It never really got going in the first half,” said Loudoun Valley head coach Jay Harkey, whose squad held a 5-3 advantage at halftime. “In the early district play, we played some teams that were not as formidable. I don’t know what it is, but sometimes they have to get woken up by a goal.”

When the Vikings did wake up, they showed every bit of the talent that lead to them to a undefeated record during the regular season, scoring five unanswered goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, en route to a 14-6 win over Battlefield and the Cedar Run District tournament title.

“Pretty much get your head out of your butts,” said Shannon Harkey of what was said at halftime. “We just always bring it together. Even if we are behind, we’ll find a way to get back up.”

The junior midfielder did her part, scoring three of her game-high four goals in the second half, two coming during the Vikings’ five-goal barrage to start the second.

“We knew coming out of the half that we would have a real opportunity to
put it too them real quick and that’s what we decided to do,” said coach Harkey. “It was
just ‘hammer down’ for the first few minutes.”

With 18 minutes remaining in the game, the Vikings slowed things down to a crawl. With a 10-2 lead, Loudoun Valley circled the ball around the perimeter of the Bobcats’ net running down the clock while looking for an opening. The Bobcats did add four more goals in the second half, but with the
Vikings controlling the tempo for the vast majority of the second,
Battlefield was never able to mount a comeback.

“We figured that hanging onto the ball was a good thing,” said coach Harkey. “We run good fast breaks, but if we don’t have it, we slow it down.”

When all was said and done, eight different Vikings found the back of the net, with Michelle Zakrzewski, Sophie Swan and Andrea Mustacchio adding two goals to Harkey’s four. Jessica Jacobson led the way for the Bobcats with two goals.

“We knew that it would be as tough and as exciting as any game that they’ve played in the last two weeks,” said coach Harkey. “It was.”
